About studying in the USA from Dubai
The United States hosts more international students than any other country, across roughly 4,000 accredited institutions. That scale is both the attraction and the difficulty — choice is enormous, costs vary wildly, and the rules changed materially this year.
Two things make America different from Britain or Europe. Degrees are broader — you can enrol undecided and declare a major later — and money is decided institution by institution, so two similar universities can differ by tens of thousands of dollars a year. Stanford Global Educational Consultants runs the whole chain from our Oud Metha office: shortlisting, applications, your I-20, funding proof and departure.
Why the USA works for UAE students
Breadth is the strongest argument. American degrees let you change direction after you enrol, which suits strong students who are genuinely undecided. Research funding is the largest in the world, and campus recruitment into technology, finance, healthcare and engineering runs deeper than anywhere else.
- Choose a major later — flexible curriculum lets you switch direction after enrolment
- Research leadership — world's largest research funding base across STEM and business
- OPT after graduation — 12 months, plus 24 months more for eligible STEM
- Strong GCC recognition — US degrees respected across Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Riyadh employers
Be realistic about cost. Tuition at private universities commonly runs $35,000 to $60,000 a year, though public universities and strong scholarship offers bring that down sharply. Aid for international students exists but is competitive, and it is decided when you are admitted — not afterwards.
Admission requirements and intakes
US admissions weigh far more than grades. Universities read your essays, references and activities alongside your transcript.
- Undergraduate — UAE Grade 12 from CBSE, IB, British, American or MoE curricula, with school reports from Grade 9 onward
- Postgraduate — a recognised bachelor's degree; GRE or GMAT for some programmes, though many have dropped it
- English — usually IELTS Academic 6.5, TOEFL iBT 79–90, or Duolingo, depending on the university
- Essays — a personal statement plus supplemental essays — these carry real weight and cannot be recycled
Fall, starting August or September, is the main intake and carries the most funding. A smaller Spring intake begins in January. Start twelve months ahead — American deadlines fall far earlier than British or European ones.
How the process works from Dubai
It starts with a free consultation at our Oud Metha office or on WhatsApp. We work through six stages — the first adds the most value, because US shortlisting is about finding institutions where you are both competitive and likely to be funded.
- 01Profile & shortlistMatch your grades, budget and target career to universities where you are competitive and likely to be funded.
- 02Application packTranscripts, personal statement, supplemental essays, references and activities — prepared and checked.
- 03SubmissionCommon App, Coalition or direct portals; postgraduate portals per programme.
- 04Offers & fundingCompare admission and aid packages, then confirm your chosen institution.
- 05I-20 & SEVISSecure the Form I-20 from your SEVP-certified university; pay the $350 I-901 SEVIS fee.
- 06Visa & travelDS-160, MRV fee, F-1 interview at the US Mission in the UAE, then accommodation and departure.
We prepare your file and your timeline. The university decides admission and the consulate decides the visa.
How long you can stay — the fixed admission rule
This is the change most guides have not caught up with, and it affects everyone starting an American degree now. F-1 students used to be admitted for "duration of status" — you could stay as long as you stayed enrolled.
Under a final rule published on 17 July 2026 and applying from 15 September 2026, you are instead admitted until a fixed date printed on your I-94: your programme end date, capped at four years, plus thirty days to depart.
Two practical consequences. If your programme runs beyond your admitted period, you must file an extension of stay with USCIS rather than simply remaining enrolled. And the grace period after you finish drops from sixty days to thirty. The rule is subject to congressional review, so detail can still move — we track it and build your dates around it.

After you graduate
Optional Practical Training is the main route: twelve months of work authorisation after your degree, plus a twenty-four-month extension for eligible STEM fields — up to three years in total. You apply through USCIS while still in status, and timing matters more under the new fixed-admission rules.

Beyond OPT, most graduates move to an H-1B work visa, which is capped and allocated by lottery. Reforms to both OPT and H-1B have been proposed but are not currently in force. Many of our students return to the GCC instead, where American degrees are well recognised across Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Riyadh.
Why UAE students choose Stanford Global for their USA plan
American applications reward preparation a year out and punish late starts. We build the timeline backwards from your intake, so tests, essays, references and funding proof land in the right order instead of in a rush.
We are candid about chances and about money. US universities decide aid at the point of admission, so a badly built shortlist costs you funding you cannot recover later. We tell you where you are genuinely competitive. Everything runs from one office in Oud Metha, Dubai — walk in with your documents, or handle it all on WhatsApp.
- Shortlists built for funding, not commission
- Timeline planned twelve months out
- Essays developed with you, never recycled
- Transparent pricing, no hidden fees
