About studying in Canada from Dubai

Canada remains one of the most popular destinations for UAE families: research-led universities and colleges, safe multicultural cities, and programmes that build work experience into the degree itself. What has changed is the paperwork. Between 2024 and 2026 Canada raised the money you must show, introduced the attestation letter, and tightened post-graduation work eligibility. Complete, well-evidenced files pass; thin ones do not.

Why Canada works for UAE students

Canada combines strong academics with practical, career-focused study. Universities are globally ranked, many programmes build paid co-op placements into the course, and cities are known for safety and long-established immigrant communities. From 1 April 2026 post-secondary students no longer need a separate co-op work permit, provided the placement is a required part of an eligible programme, the work component does not exceed 50% of the total programme, and the conditions set by IRCC are met — one step fewer in a process that had too many.

  • Co-op learning — Placements built into many programmes — no separate work permit since 1 April 2026.
  • Globally ranked institutions — Strong research and teaching across universities and public colleges alike.
  • Safe, welcoming cities — Large, established immigrant communities across every major city.
  • Post-study work — The Post-Graduation Work Permit supports skilled work after an eligible programme.

Studying in Canada does not create any entitlement to permanent residence. It can build the experience some skilled routes reward, and we will explain those routes honestly — but we do not sell them as an outcome.

03

Admission requirements and intakes

Entry rules differ by institution and programme, so treat the following as the common shape and verify against your course. Canada runs three intakes — Fall (September), the largest, then Winter (January) and Summer (May), which is smaller and course-limited. Start about twelve months ahead: the acceptance letter, the attestation letter and the funds evidence all have to be in place before the permit can be filed.

  • Undergraduate — Completed UAE Year 12 with strong grades and required subjects for your course.
  • Postgraduate — A recognised bachelor's degree in a related field.
  • English — universities — Commonly IELTS Academic 6.5 overall, with band minimums set per programme.
  • English — public colleges — Commonly IELTS 6.0 overall, though some diplomas ask for more.
  • Attestation letter — A provincial or territorial attestation letter for most undergraduate and college applications.
  • Designated institution — Your institution must be a designated learning institution — DLI status alone does not make a programme eligible for post-study work.

How the process works from Dubai

It starts with a free consultation at our Oud Metha office or on WhatsApp. Send us your grades and budget, we confirm what you are competitive for, then we work through six stages. Stage four carries the most risk, which is why we spend the most time on it.

  1. 01
    Profile & DLI shortlist
We match your grades and budget to designated learning institutions you fit.
  2. 02
    Apply & get acceptance
Prepare and submit applications, then confirm your letter of acceptance.
  3. 03
    Attestation letter
Obtain the provincial or territorial attestation letter where your category still requires one.
  4. 04
    Proof of funds & documents
Assemble financial evidence that is genuinely available and traceable, plus a clear letter of explanation.
  5. 05
    Study permit & biometrics
Submit the study permit application and complete biometrics.
  6. 06
    Pre-departure
Accommodation, forex, SIM and airport pickup — so you land ready to start.

Processing times change regularly and vary by country of application. Check IRCC's current processing-times tool for applications from the UAE before you plan around a date — the published estimates are not maximums and are not guarantees.

The Canadian study permit (2026)

Most students need a study permit from IRCC, a letter of acceptance from a designated learning institution, proof of funds, and — for most undergraduate and college applicants — a provincial or territorial attestation letter. From 1 January 2026 there is an important exemption: master's and doctoral students in degree-granting programmes at public designated learning institutions no longer need an attestation letter. All other requirements still apply, and the exemption list is set by IRCC and changes, so we confirm which category you fall into before you apply.

Two things we will not repeat because they are not IRCC rules. There is no universal twelve-month passport-validity requirement for study permits. And residence in the United Arab Emirates does not by itself trigger an immigration medical exam — one can still be required because of recent residence or travel in a designated country, because of health-sensitive intended work, or at an officer's request, but UAE residence alone is not the trigger.

After you graduate

A Canadian credential is well recognised across the GCC job market, and eligible graduates can build experience through the Post-Graduation Work Permit. Eligibility is narrower than most guides admit, and it turns on three things.

First, length. Graduates of a master's programme of at least eight months, and graduates of programmes of two years or more, can receive a permit of up to three years; shorter programmes generally receive a permit matching the programme length. Second, language: a qualifying test result is now required, with the threshold set by the type of institution you attended. Third, field of study: many applicants graduating from programmes other than a bachelor's, master's or doctoral degree must meet a field-of-study requirement, and whether it applies depends on when they applied for their study permit. Degree graduates and eligible flight-school graduates are exempt, and the eligible-fields list is revised periodically.

Attending a designated learning institution does not by itself make a programme eligible — eligibility is assessed at programme level. We check yours before you enrol, not after.

Post-study work

Maximum length
Up to 3 years
Qualifying for 3 years
Master's, or programme of 2+ years

The Post-Graduation Work Permit is normally a one-time permit. We never promise a permit, a job or permanent residence — studying in Canada creates no entitlement to either.

Frequently asked questions

Straight answers from our Dubai-based Canada admission counsellors.

Most study permit applications require a provincial or territorial attestation letter from the province where your institution is located. From 1 January 2026 there is an exemption: master's and doctoral students in degree-granting programmes at public designated learning institutions no longer need one. All other requirements still apply. We confirm which category you fall into before you apply, because the exemption list is set by IRCC and changes.

Processing times change regularly and vary by country of application. IRCC directs applicants to its live processing-times tool and states that the estimates are neither maximums nor guarantees. Check the current time for applications from the UAE on canada.ca before you plan around a date, and lodge a complete file — incomplete applications are the most common cause of avoidable delay.

Not automatically. IRCC's country requirements do not impose an immigration medical exam based on residence in the United Arab Emirates alone. An exam can still be required — because of recent residence or travel in a designated country, because your intended occupation is health-sensitive, or at an officer's request. Similarly, IRCC does not publish a universal twelve-month passport-validity rule for study permits.
