Georgia has become a popular, affordable destination for international students — especially those who want to study medicine in English. Universities are modern, cities are safe, and living costs are low. It is a common choice for students from the UAE and across the Gulf.

One point of language matters before anything else. Georgian medical faculties award an MD (Doctor of Medicine), not an MBBS. The degree is treated as the equivalent primary medical qualification, but your certificate will say MD — expect that wording when you submit it for equivalency or licensing later.

For medicine especially, Georgia solves a real problem: English-taught programmes at a fraction of private-college costs, with no donations. Tuition for other degrees is low too. Recognition still depends on choosing the right university and clearing the licensing exam wherever you plan to practise.

Be careful with the marketing you will see elsewhere. WHO and UNESCO do not accredit medical schools. A university appearing in the World Directory of Medical Schools (WDOMS) means it is listed, not that any global body has approved its quality. Listing is necessary for many licensing routes — it is not a stamp of accreditation, and anyone telling you otherwise is selling.

Medicine in Georgia suits NEET-qualified students who want English-medium training without India's seat crunch. The main medical intake is September. If India is your goal, plan around the National Medical Commission (NMC) — it replaced the old Medical Council of India in 2020, so any advice still referring to "MCI approval" is out of date.

Georgia's student route runs in two stages, and this is where most families are misinformed. You first apply for a D3 immigration (study) visa at a Georgian embassy or consulate, on the strength of your admission letter. The state fee is around USD 20. It is not a one-year renewable student visa.

The D3 lets you enter and stay for up to 90 days. Once you are in Georgia and enrolled, you must apply to the Public Service Hall for a study residence permit — ideally around 40 days before your permitted stay expires, because processing takes about 30 days. The residence permit, renewed annually, is what actually covers you for the length of your degree.

This is the part that matters most. An MD from Georgia can be valid in India — but only if you choose the university carefully and meet every condition. The NMC checks whether your programme complies with its 2021 Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate rules rather than approving universities one by one, so no agent can hand you an "NMC approved list".

Your degree opens different doors depending on where you want to work. The licensing step is what turns a degree into a licence to practise — and each regulator sets its own bar.

UAE families should plan for this early: the health regulators here generally expect a primary medical qualification plus around two years of clinical experience after internship before they will licence a general practitioner. Coming straight from graduation to a DHA or DOH licence is not realistic; most graduates complete that experience elsewhere first.
